After a long wait and a year after its launch on iOS, WhatsApp is about to integrate voice message transcription functionality for Android users. This new feature, already available on competing applications such as Google Messages and Telegram, marks a turning point for the most used instant messaging in the world.

Indeed, since May 2023, iPhone users have benefited from this functionality allowing them to convert voice into text, thus making it easier to understand messages without needing to listen to them. For Telegram, although this feature is available, it is still limited for non-premium users to two transcriptions per week.
As reported by thespandroid, the most recent beta version of WhatsApp for Android, 2.24.7.7, revealed through APK analysis the imminence of this feature thanks to several eloquent lines of code. For example, the app will require an additional 150MB of data to be downloaded to enable transcription, using the device’s voice recognition system to provide end-to-end encrypted transcriptions, ensuring privacy.
Although this feature is under development and has not yet been activated for the general public, its future integration under the Settings > Discussions tab seems obvious, as is already the case on iOS. Voicemail transcription is a significant improvement for users who prefer to read rather than listen, or for those in environments where listening to a voicemail is not practical.
Although the official launch date for this feature on Android remains unknown, the anticipation is palpable. WhatsApp is thus catching up with its competitors and continuing to improve the user experience by meeting a growing demand for more accessible and convenient communications.
