This horror game is based on a true CIA story, guaranteed to flip!

Outlast is one of the most terrifying licenses in the entire video game industry. and thrilled thousands of players through its two opuses. The first opus (2013) takes place in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, in which the target patients of experiments have gone completely mad and are, of course, trying to kill you savagely.

While the next installment, called The Outlast Trials, will go back to basics with multiplayer gameplay in a similar atmosphere, the developers at Red Barrels have revealed more about their inspirations. Few expected it, but the famous asylum of Outlast would have indeed existed in our real world.

Outlast asylum straight out of CIA files

Organization having kept most of its work always very secret, the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) maintains a lot of mysteries. But according to the archives collected by History, the agency would have carried out acts in the 1950s that inspired the Red Barrels teams. The archives in question mention the existence of the MK-Ultra project, started in 1953 by Allan Dulles. The objective of this project was to find a way to control the human mind using various illicit substances and psychological manipulators in order to give the United States the upper hand during the Cold War.

“The program included more than 150 experiments on humans involving psychedelic drugs, paralyzers and electric shocks. Sometimes the subjects knew they were participating in a study, but other times they had no idea, even when the hallucinogens started to work.”

Still according to History, most of the tests on human subjects were carried out from 1953 to 1964 in universities, hospitals or even prisons in the United States but also in Canada. The government terminated the program in 1973, and until then, we do not know the exact number of victims of the MK-Ultra project. This sends shivers down the spine, but above all it inspired the Red Barrels teams.

Experiments gone wrong as a plot for Outlast

Philippe Morin, co-founder of the Red Barrels studio, recently revealed that he advised his teams to learn about the MK-Ultra project in order to build the plot as well as the atmosphere of the first opus of Outlast. According to him, the developers imagined experiments that would have turned out very badly, and would have made the subjects totally aggressive.

“In this era of privatized health care, we thought it wouldn’t be a stretch to invent a society using a criminal insane asylum to perform experiments on patients. In our history, these experiments would create mutations and horrible side effects.”
