This is how safe operations with the eye laser are

This is a paid post presented by YOUSEEBASEL

See clearly and sharply when you get up in the morning, never clean your glasses or buy new lenses: people with good eyesight enjoy advantages in their lives. They can also do sports without restrictions. Those who cannot see well have to decide: glasses or lenses. And is confronted with his visual aid every day. Or they can get help with a laser eye surgery to correct their visual acuity. But many fear such an operation. The Zurich eye laser pioneer Professor Theo Seiler from YOUSEEBASEL and YOUSEEZÜRI says how great the risks are with an eye laser operation and for whom this procedure is suitable.

Just a grain of sand in my eye hurts enormously. The idea that you are operating on my eyes with a laser scares me a lot. Can you understand that?
Theo Seiler: Yes of course. A grain of sand in the eye really hurts, that’s the way it is. The eye is the best protected organ in the whole body. That also makes sense: in the past, a person had no chance of surviving in the savannah, for example, if he hadn’t seen anything or was blind. If he was missing another organ, it was still possible to stay alive. Therefore, the foremost part of the eye, the cornea, has many nerves, which makes the surface of the eye extremely sensitive. This is a simple but extremely important protection mechanism.

You are operating on the eye. I also imagine that to be very painful. Do I have to be afraid of it??
No. We have developed surgical techniques for laser eye surgery in which we leave the sensitive surface of the eye practically untouched and carry out the decisive steps with a high-precision laser. That is why one feels during such an operation no pain. We also numb the cornea with droplets that we put on Give eye. We only do a small one on the eye itself during the operation Cut at a depth of 120 micrometers. The whole operation only takes about ten minutes.

And how is it after the operation?
Then you have a kind of foreign body sensation in the eye. During the first night, the patients are given a so-called bandage contact lens. This prevents the eye from hurting. The fine cut grows completely closed again within the first two days.

What is a bandage contact lens?
This is a medicated contact lens that helps the patient against any pain and infection. She has no corrective diopters. In addition, patients are given a pain reliever such as Dafalgan to take home with them as needed.

How long do you have to wear this lens after the operation?
Only one night, the next day it comes out again. And then you should see between 70 to 120 percent – without visual aids such as glasses or lenses.

So it can’t happen that I wake up the first night because my operated eye hurts?
Yes, that happens every now and then. But every patient receives the cell phone number of the doctor who performed the operation. From my own experience I can say: It is extremely rare that someone has called me about problems – maybe two or three times a year.

Something can always go wrong during an operation, which is often a major concern. How high is the risk with laser eye surgery?
I have never seen a patient lose sight during an operation. In our laser eye clinics, the complication rate is less than 0.1 percent. However, inflammation or infection can always occur and, if treated properly, in the vast majority of cases will not cause permanent damage. I haven’t seen the surgeon make a mistake with us for a long time. However, we are referred to patients who have performed such laser operations cheaply abroad or with less experienced surgeons and for whom something actually went wrong.

So do you think the risk is low?
We compared the risk of complications from laser eye surgery with the risk of wearing contact lenses. After three years, the two values already equalize, after which the risk is higher for contact lens wearers. For example, if he gets an infection or inflammation in his eye from leaving the lenses in his eyes all night.

The eye must be open during the operation itself. As a patient, do I see everything you do?
Yes, but that’s not a problem. We practice this together in the first step of the operation. You should get used to the fact that something is happening in front of your eye and you are still looking at the fixation point. It is also possible to take a sedative – from natural valerian to a drug like Valium.

What happens if you feel that a patient is too afraid of an eye surgery?
We depend on patients being satisfied with our work, because our reputation depends on it. And this is central to us, we live from it. About ten percent of the patients who come to us and want laser eye surgery do not operate at all. These are people who are either anatomically unsuitable, too critical or even traumatized. Or they have expectations that are too high that we cannot meet. There are also so-called “pince-nez” who automatically squint their eyes as soon as they see an ophthalmologist. With such patients, one has to allow enough time to be able to perform the operation safely. And I know what I’m talking about, because I’m a pince-nez myself!

How often do I have to come for a check-up after the operation?
The first time the day after the operation. Then we remove the bandage contact lens, check that everything is okay and do an eye test. Then there is another check a month later.

When I wear glasses, I have to change lenses every few years because my eyes change. What is it like after a laser operation, do I have to repeat it?
As a rule, an operation lasts until the end of your life. But there are exceptions. For example, between the ages of 20 and 30, the eye can become a little longer and therefore more myopic. If a 20-year-old woman has a laser, it may not be enough for ever; a second operation may be needed later. But they are told that before the first operation.
