this is how the studio creates gruesome scenes

How do you set up a visceral and believable horror gore vibe in The Callisto Protocol? The studio reveals its secret recipe which is the same as that of the developers of Mortal Kombat…

Horror and gore should be ubiquitous in The Callisto Protocol, the new game from the dad of Dead Space. In any case, the latest gameplay video goes in this direction with dismemberments in spades. Chris Stone, Creative Director, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of horror and gore scenes.

The Callisto Protocol is inspired by real life

PCGamesN was able to speak with Chris Stone, chief creative officer at Striking Distance, about The Callisto Protocol. A survival horror that follows in the footsteps of Dead Space. The teams do not spare themselves and have gone so far as to view real examples of horror and gore.

We found ourselves studying many real examples of horror and gore. While these examples were far less fun to research, they were some of the most impactful and valuable content to craft realistic visuals and experiences.

This way of doing things is not an isolated case, but it can have serious repercussions on humans. A developer of Mortal Kombat 11 had paid the price and had shared this experience with Kotaku. This person, who was in charge of the cutscenes, had to see a therapist who diagnosed him with post-traumatic stress disorder. He had extremely graphic and violent dreams, he couldn’t sleep anymore and he stayed awake for days to avoid these nightmares.

Other inspirations (Resident Evil, The Thing, Dead Space…)

Real life isn’t the only thing Striking Distance relies on. He indeed claims to belong to survival-horror by citing tenors of the genre such as Resident Evil or Silent Hill as “obvious influences”. But also in horror cinema with John Carpenter’s The Thing or even Event Horizon. Without naming any feature film, Chris Stone also mentions French and Korean horror cinema which, for him, “really advance their game in the horror genre”.

And Dead Space in all this? The infeasible ideas of DS for the time will be able to be materialized.

All those ideas that we had for Dead Space years ago, and couldn’t realize because the hardware couldn’t keep up, we can now apply them and it’s amazing.
