This is how you can save at Oktoberfest 2023

Price for the beer at Oktoberfest 2023

Economic value: In 2019, visitors brought in almost 1.3 billion euros. According to the organizers, festival visitors spent an average of 70 euros per person directly at the Oktoberfest in 2019. Foreign visitors spent a further 289 million euros in the city for food, shopping, taxi rides and public transport. They spent another around 513 million euros on accommodation and catering.

Employees: Around 8,000 permanent and 5,000 temporary workers are employed.

Beer tents: Gigantic. The largest is the Hofbräuzelt with almost 10,000 seats including a beer garden. All tents together: around 120,000 places.

Wiesn way back: Ur-Wiesn starts with a wedding

At the very first Oktoberfest in Munich more than 200 years ago, there weren’t even tents, just open booths: the first Oktoberfest was a royal wedding celebration. The whole of Munich celebrated when Crown Prince Ludwig – later King Ludwig I – married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in October 1810. A horse race on October 17th was the highlight and conclusion of the five-day celebrations. The area, then located just outside the city gates, was named Theresienwiese in honor of the bride.
