Although “Fight Club” failed at the box office (and was even booed!), Brad Pitt considered it from the start to be the best film of his career, a film that is today the one of the most respected in the history of cinema!
With his plethora of films and series, Brad Pitt is quite simply one of the biggest stars in Hollywood – and one of the best actors too. Although he initially struggled to establish himself in the field, he is now one of the most respected (and highest paid) comedians in the world.
However, popularity comes with several challenges and criticisms. For Brad Pittit is his classic Fight Club which received a mixed reception from the public when it was released in 1999.
Based on the exceptional literature of Chuck Palahniuk, the film presented the Bullet Train actor in a new light. However, this was not enough to maintain audience interest at the time, and the film was booed several times when it premiered at the 1999 Venice Film Festival. Brad Pitt however had a very different reaction…
Brad Pitt’s reaction as the film gets booed
If the public is more open-minded today, this was not so much the case more than twenty years ago when many had a more conservative vision of cinema. This is one of the many reasons why David Fincher’s film failed at the box office and was criticized for being irresponsible.
This was mainly due to the film’s most famous line, spoken by Helena Bonham Carter, as recalled Brad Pitt during an interview with The Ringer in 2019.
“We come to one of Helena’s scandalous lines – ‘I haven’t been fucked like that since primary school!’ – and literally the guy running the festival got up and left. Edward and I were always the only ones laughing.”
While Brad Pitt and Edward Norton were laughing every second of the scene, the audience present was not really on their side. Norton (via The Wrap) recalls: “He was booed. It didn’t work well at all. Brad turned around and looked at me and said, ‘This is the best movie I could ever be in.’ He was so happy.”
Edward Norton also remembers that the Troy actor was really delighted and joyful throughout the screening. The film is however one of the most cult in cinema today and one thing is certain: the careers ofEdward Norton And Brad Pitt absolutely did not suffer from this “failure”, on the contrary.
Fight Club is currently available to rediscover in streaming on Disney+.
