This is the end for this much appreciated feature but…

Usually, a PS5 update means improvements or new features. However, the latest marks an exception, removing a key feature. Let’s see what it’s all about.

PS5 updates are often met with enthusiasm, as they tend to improve the user experience by improving existing features or introducing new ones. However, the latest update marks an unexpected turning point.

The end of an era for the PS5

Sony has removed the Twitter integration feature from its next-generation console, the PS5. Initially planned for a specific date, this withdrawal was carried out with a slight delay. Until yesterday evening, French time, it was still possible to share screenshots and videos on Twitter. But as of this morning, the Twitter icon has disappeared from the PS5 user interface.

With this update, the sharing option on console is now limited to sending screenshots or videos to a group of friends on the PS5. Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, announced that he wanted to “examine” the situation. But while there have been discussions about increasing Twitter’s API costs, they haven’t borne fruit. It’s officially the end of Twitter integration on the PS5, marking the end of an era. The X developer account, however, wanted to reassure by explaining that they are still working on a solution:

Despite this loss of direct integration, it is still possible to share your PS5 captures on Twitter, although this requires additional steps. You can use the PlayStation application to download your captures, then upload them to the site, or use a USB key to transfer from a PC.

Twitter, in retreat

Twitter has been in the middle of a storm since the takeover by Elon Musk. The network is facing a decline in its most active users, known as “heavy tweeters.” These users, although they represent less than 10% of monthly users, generate 90% of all tweets and half of global revenue. Their significant decline since the pandemic directly affects engagement on the platform and, by extension, its attractiveness to businesses.

Additionally, advertisers typically avoid platforms associated with controversy or nudity for fear of harming their brand image. Major advertisers like Dyson, PBS Kids and Forbes have suspended their Twitter ads. Following the presence of questionable accounts and ineffective moderation. Under these conditions (in addition to the increase in API costs) we can understand why the PS5 is cutting ties.
