This is the funniest moment of Cannes 2023 and you surely missed it!

During the awards ceremony of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Jane Fonda was the instigator of the funniest moment. And you may not have noticed!

After two weeks of competition, the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to an end with its closing ceremony and its long-awaited awards ceremony. The Jury, chaired by Ruben Östlund, winner of the Palme d’or for Sans Filtre last year, and composed of Julia Ducournau, Brie Larson, Rungano Nyoni, Maryam Touzani, Paul Dano, Denis Ménochet, Atiq Rahimi and Damián Szifron, delivered its verdict and rewarded Anatomy with a fall from Justine Triet.

This shock thriller, carried by Swann Arlaud, the German actress Sandra Hüller and the young Milo Machada Graner, follows the trial of a woman accused of having killed her husband a year earlier. His young visually impaired son attends the instruction, a real dissection of the couple formed by his parents before the tragedy.

Jane Fonda’s Hilarious Throw

Before Ruben Östlund announced the name of the winner, it was Jane Fonda who was present on stage to introduce the Palme d’or with a premonitory speech welcoming a “historic edition”, with seven directors in the running: “For the first time, seven directors in competition. It’s historic. One day, we won’t even ask ourselves the question”.

The American actress and activist looked back on her first time at Cannes in 1963 and feels she’s come a long way: “No women were competing at the time, but we didn’t notice anything. We didn’t think there was anything wrong. We’ve made a lot of progress since then. But there’s still some way to go. Celebrate change when it happens.”.

What was her pleasant surprise when she heard Justine Triet’s name for the Palme d’Or! The French director then took Jane Fonda in her arms before recovering her prize and delivering a powerful and committed speech on the cinema crisis and the wave of historical protest that France has gone through.

She then went to thank the Jury who rewarded her, but during this time, a hilarious (but furtive) moment occurred. You may not have seen it, but Jane Fonda did not have time to award the Palme d’Or diploma to Justine Triet. In a hurry, she then listened to the little voice in her head and squarely threw the parchment at the French director who took the paper in the back, before David Thion of Films Pelléas who produced the film, picked it up. down and give it to him.

This moment of the closing ceremony has already made the rounds on social networks and is obviously the subject of humorous comments, as the sequence is unexpected but also very spontaneous on the part of Jane Fonda.

The film Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet will be released in theaters on August 23, 2023.
