Small scare for iPhone users in 92 countries: Apple warned several hundred people of a risk to their security on Wednesday April 10. THE “threat notifications”, as the brand calls them, are sent when Apple believes that a state or mercenaries have used Pegasus software, developed by the Israeli company NSO, to hack a device remotely.
“Apple believes you are being targeted by state-backed attackers who are attempting to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple account. These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do.”or the perfect message to start your day in total paranoia.
Isolation mode, the temporary solution to protect yourself
“If your device is compromised, they might be able to remotely access your sensitive data, communications, or even your camera and microphone. Although it is possible that this is a false alert, please take this warning seriously »says Apple, without saying who “they” is, before offering some advice.
For several years, Apple has been actively fighting against spyware like Pegasus, which uses very sophisticated techniques to infect an iPhone. One of the solutions imagined by the brand is the addition of an Isolation mode (Lockdown in English), which deactivates many functions (communications are limited, while accounts are no longer synchronized). A temporary solution while waiting to eliminate the software.
For a company like Apple, which owes part of its success to its promise to respect user data, the NSO group is a nuisance. The brand has sued the company and is trying, update after update, to close the flaws exploited by this software.
