Hammer throwing star takes out trash, now the Olympics are in danger of being eliminated

Thousands of accidents happen in the household, and now hammer thrower Eivind Henriksen is also knocked out. A slab of ice is the Norwegian’s undoing. He just wanted to take out the trash. After his injury, he travels to Australia and no longer feels safe there either.

Actually, Norway’s top hammer thrower Eivind Henriksen just wanted to take out the trash. But that went terribly wrong and the 33-year-old now has to deal with a bitter setback while preparing for the European Championships and Olympic Games in Paris. “I slipped on a slab of ice at the veranda door and fell on my left knee. To injure myself so clumsily is just stupid. Absolutely fantastic…” the Tokyo Olympic silver medalist told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

Nevertheless, Henriksen flew to the training camp in Australia the day after the household accident because he assumed that nothing else had happened. But now he can do next to nothing Down Under because of bursitis and pain. “I tried to throw, but it hurts like hell sometimes,” said Henriksen, who has repeatedly been set back by injuries in his career.

Henriksen is now enjoying the sun in Australia with his wife and two sons. But there are dangers lurking there too. “You have to be careful walking around the mall with flip flops on the tiles after a rain shower. I’ve slipped here a few times too,” he joked.

It is currently unclear how long he will have to take a break in view of the European Championships in Rome at the beginning of June and the Summer Games in Paris at the beginning of August. He hopes that “at least there is still enough time until the Olympics,” said the third place in the 2022 World Cup and European Championships. Henriksen is the Norwegian record holder with a best distance of 81.58 meters. He achieved this when he won the silver medal in Tokyo. At the World Championships in Budapest last summer he only achieved seventh place with 77.06 meters.
