This LG screen bends, stretches and twists all over the place

LG has unveiled a new damage-free stretch, fold and twist screen prototype. Once again, LG seeks to position itself as an innovative manufacturer in screen technologies.

On November 8, LG’s division dedicated to screens, LG Display, lifted the veil on a rather special screen prototype since it is presented as being ” the world’s first 12-inch high-definition stretchable display featuring exceptional free-form technology that allows it to be stretched, bent and twisted without distortion or damage “.

A technologically advanced screen that bends and twists

LG announcement

that this screen is the first to achieve a “20% stretch”, especially since it has a resolution of 100 ppi and displays RGB colors. The manufacturer indicates that this screen is designed from a “highly resilient film-like substrate, made of special silicon used in contact lenses“. The micro-LEDs of this screen have a size of less than 40 micrometers, which offers durability and very good definition according to LG.

Finally, instead of using linear, rigid circuitry, LG Display used spring-like circuitry, to allow for flexing and bending while ensuring the display could spring back to its original shape.

Its prototype screen can be stretched from 12 to 14 inches. This is not the first time that we have seen this, since Oppo had created the Oppo X, with a rollable screen, as LG had also been able to do with a smartphone, or a screen that could fold in both ways.

More recently, Samsung and Intel presented a computer with a rollable screen. If these screens are impressive, LG goes further here, since unlike the other prototypes, this one has noa priorino need to be controlled by a motor. Unfortunately, LG Display hasn’t released a demo video, so it’s unclear just how much the display can be manipulated.

LG has big ambitions for this prototype

The manufacturer is proud of its screen and “its high flexibility, durability and reliability“which according to him”maximize its marketing potential“.

He has already thought of several possible scenarios and thinks that we will eventually be able to use this type of screen “on curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles and airplanes“.
