Article updated on February 2, 2023: According to the American media Auto NewsTHE concept car Genesis X, from the Hyundai group, should indeed be marketed. This is what an executive of the brand would have announced in front of several hundred American dealers.

In addition to this convertible, Genesis should also market the coupe version in 2024, the concept car of which was unveiled in 2021.

Original article, November 17, 2022 : The high-end division of Hyundai, Genesis is taking advantage of the Los Angeles show to unveil its X Convertible, a superb electric convertible concept. Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that it will be marketed as is.

If you don’t know Genesis, that’s normal. The constructor, which is actually a premium division of Hyundai as Lexus is with Toyota is not marketed in France. But this is the case in some European countries. The Korean firm recently launched its GV60 (cousin of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5) at the beginning of the year on the Old Continent while it is already selling the GV70 and G80 in Europe. Very down to earth models, which do not prevent the brand from wanting to make its customers dream. And that’s exactly what it does with this brand new concept unveiled at the Los Angeles salon opening tomorrow.

A line to fall

Here is the brand new X Convertible, an ultra-attractive electric convertible concept, which follows two other styling studies designed by Genesis. In April 2021, the firm lifted the veil on the “X”, a high-end coupe which could then compete with the BMW 8 Series if it saw the light of day in the next few years. A year later, it was the turn of the X Speedium Coupé to show itself. It was then abouta reworked version of the previous conceptresponsible for announcing the future stylistic identity of the brand’s next models.

It is therefore today an even more pleasure-oriented model that completes this trio, displaying lines that should leave no one indifferent.

At the front, we discover a clean face, crossed by light bands forming a triangle to recall the grille of thermal models. These also act as optics, giving to this concept car spaceship tunes. Large air intakes complete the package, offering a sportier character to this futuristic front end. In profile, the proportions are harmonious, while the Genesis press release gives no indication of the exact dimensions of the car.

But according to the first images, this one seems rather generous. Finally, at the rear, we discover a design again very minimalist, with two strips forming the light signature of the convertible. This one is then dressed in a shade ” Crane White“, meaning “White Crane”. As the brand explains, this bird represents nobility and holiness in Korean culture.

Shared platform

Unlike many convertibles, thee Genesis X Convertible chose to go with a retractable hardtop and not a canvas top, in order to establish its top-of-the-range positioning. This device is nevertheless much heavier, to the detriment of autonomy. But the brand does not give more details on this subject for the time being.

A total of four people can sit in the concept car, which offers a futuristic driving position, consisting of a digital handset extending into a vertical touch screen in a completely new way. Genesis does not give any details on the on-board technologies, and is content to specify that the interior is dressed in ” Giwa Navy“, a shade inspired by the tiles of Korean houses.

If the press release from the premium brand specifies that this concept is electric, it does not, however, give any information on its technical sheet. Just, do we know, that it shares its architecture and its engine with the two previous style studies. Except that Genesis also did not give details on the motorization of these, which could be based on the group’s E-GMP platform.

As a reminder, this one already equips the Kia EV6 and other Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. Unfortunately, there is very little chance that this X Convertible will see the light of day in the form of a production vehicle, whereas the convertibles no longer really have the wind in their sails. Nevertheless, it cannot be excluded that it is produced in small quantities, or that it simply serves as an inspiration for future models more pragmatic in the future.
