Hygiene and cleanliness are two essential elements in the kitchen; bad habits can lead to food contamination and therefore more or less serious food poisoning. It is important to implement simple, routine actions, for example washing your hands before using the stove, using utensils and cooking on a clean work surface, or even cleaning your food thoroughly before consuming it. Simple rules, but ones that can easily be neglected and lead to the spread of bad bacteria.

As we told you, washing fruits and vegetables is therefore essential to avoid the risk of food poisoning. However, certain vegetables like cucumber or zucchini very often get through, as they are peeled we don’t automatically think about washing them. It is a mistake ! Peeling a vegetable or fruit does not mean that all risks of contamination are removed. Indeed, cucumbers are grown in fields in which the soil, water or even manure can be contaminated, elements which come into direct contact with this vegetable.

Why isn’t peeling them enough?

It’s quite simple, peeling the cucumber or any other vegetable does not prevent the flesh from being contaminated by the surface of the skin. A contamination which is responsible for a large part of food poisoning, especially when the food is consumed raw. This is why it is essential to wash all the vegetables and fruits you eat before cooking them, even if they are peeled! Washing should simply be done in clear, running water, ideally rubbing them vigorously with a vegetable brush. This will then make it possible to remove not only the bacteria which may be present on the surface, but also traces of pesticides for example.

For salad or cabbage type vegetables that cannot be scrubbed with a brush, you can simply soak them in a basin of clear water where you add a few drops of white vinegar. On the other hand, be careful not to let it soak for more than 5 minutes, because all the minerals and vitamins present dissolve in the water.
