While iFixit has recently launched a new kit to permanently get rid of the Joy-Con Drift on its Nintendo Switch controllers, the benchmark for repairability has just published the results of its latest teardown (i.e. an in-depth analysis and disassembly of ‘a device).

On this occasion, the site’s experts took a look at the latest from FairPhone, a manufacturer recognized for its smartphones designed and produced in an eco-responsible manner. According to iFixit, the various improvements made to the FairPhone 5 have enabled it to obtain the ultimate score of 10/10making it the most durable and repairable smartphone launched in recent years.

The FairPhone 5, the new king of repairability

First of all, iFixit salutes integration of the connector cover with the upper module, which makes it easier for users to disassemble the device. Another good point, the photo sensors are all individually replaceable.

But the most impactful change lies in the transition from a central module to a motherboard and a separate daughter card. In this way, Fairphone was able to introduce a larger battery (3950 mAh to 4200 mAh)without harming the possibilities of repair.

But that’s not all since the manufacturer has stepped up its efforts to provide long-term software support. Indeed, the FairPhone 5 benefits from 8 years of Android security updates and 5 years of Android updates. However, there is a small downside on the fingerprint sensor, a little too complicated to disassemble according to iFixit.

FairPhone’s promise to enable five Android upgrades and more than eight years of security updates with the FairPhone 5 is an ambitious innovation in an industry that leans toward more ephemeral product lifecycles. This is a significant step forward in sustainability, setting a new standard for the lifespan of our smartphones,” concludes iFixit.
