If initially WhatsApp is an instant messaging application, the group wishes to develop its product. Thanks to the launch of WhatsApp channels, Meta affirms its ambition to little by little transform its application into a social network.
Just like on Instagram, WhatsApp users will be able to follow discussion channels, launched by “thousands of organizations, sports teams, artists or opinion leaders directly on the application”. Here too, it will be a one-way discussion, since only its creator will be able to send messages to his subscribers. They can simply respond to surveys, or react with emojis.

WhatsApp’s new feature is more private than Instagram
The major difference between WhatsApp and Instagram channels is confidentiality. Indeed, on Instagram, users can see who you are subscribed to and who is in the distribution channels (via reactions to messages). However, the new feature of WhatsApp offers much more discretion. Described by Meta as “the world’s most private streaming service”, no one will be able to see which channels you are subscribed to.
Phone numbers and profile photos will not be displayed. Another advantage for administrators: they will be able to choose who can follow their channel.
