This new type of SIM card will solve network failure problems in an astonishing way


During the MWC, a very interesting little innovation nevertheless went unnoticed. However, this is a brand new SIM card, called rSIM. Concretely, this will allow you to benefit from dual SIM but with a single card.

We thought we had covered all the major announcements of MWC 2024. However, one of them has gone relatively unnoticed until now, even though it could well revolutionize a still major aspect of our smartphones: the map SIM. If this has evolved since its creation, to the point of becoming completely virtual with the eSIM, it seems that operators have not yet finished with them.

This is how Telekom IoT and Tele2 IoT, two German operators, developed rSIM, a completely new type of SIM. This time, the letter r means “resilient”. A good name, since rSIM concretely aims to put an end to network outages. Or at least, to allow its user to continue using their smartphone even when their operator is in trouble.

For this, it is inspired by the concept of dual SIM, which allows you to have two functional telephone numbers on a single device. rSIM takes this concept and simplifies it. Concretely, it is also possible to configure network profiles, but this time on a single location. No need for a second slot in the smartphone or to configure an eSIM: just one card is enough.

Also, when the first number encounters a network outage, the smartphone is able to automatically switch to the second profile to get around the problem. In this way, the user will theoretically never be unable to connect. In addition, technically, it will be possible to configure up to 4 numbers on a single smartphone if the latter supports dual SIM.

However, we will have to wait a little before seeing it land on the market. Indeed, its creators plan to release a first prototype next year and have not yet commented on a global launch.
