this old affordable smartphone finally gets HyperOS, but there’s a catch

Xiaomi now seems determined to bring HyperOS to all its compatible smartphones, even the oldest. This weekend, a model released in 2021 received the update. Unfortunately, there are a few essential absentees from the call.

At the end of 2023, Xiaomi began the deployment of HyperOS, its brand new overlay replacing MIUI. We naturally thought that only the most recent smartphones would be eligible for the update. But a few months later, the manufacturer announced the good news: some of its old models will indeed be able to download the new overlay. Today, it’s the turn of one of them.

During this weekend, Poco F3 users saw HyperOS land on their smartphone. The latter, released in 2021 for only 399 euros, was clearly not at the top of the list to benefit from the overcoat. So this is excellent news for anyone who still has the phone… as long as they aren’t too fussy about the details.

The Poco F3 receives HyperOS, but not as we expected

Indeed, the Poco F3 is entitled to a small particularity compared to its comrades. Where the latter took advantage of the update to upgrade to Android 14, this is not the case for our topic of the day. The smartphone remains on Android 13, even after switching to HyperOS. Likewise, it does not benefit from the latest security update. Currently, only the January 2024 patch is installed on the Poco F3.

It is not yet known whether Xiaomi plans to update the smartphone to Android 14, with the latest security updates – although we hope so for its users. Moreover, the Poco F3 seems to benefit from all the advantages brought by HyperOS, according to the changelog which accompanies the deployment. This is particularly the case for HyperConnect, a platform improving the connected experience between several devices. Moreover, the new interface as well as all the HyperOS improvements are present in the update.
