There is a lot of activity in the workrooms at Döltschiweg 182. Plane blades glide over wooden boards, sewing machines whir, and bicycle valves sigh. For a few hours, the 32 students in the two secondary classes 2B deal neither with mathematical formulas nor text analysis. “Creating something with your hands for a change is a pleasure,” Gajaluxei (15) says and continues to plan.

By converting old school desks into cutting boards, the students breathe new life into their old tables. Residual materials are sewn into trendy hair scrunchies and bicycles are repaired instead of thrown away. This also opens up completely new horizons: Aymen (14), impressed by the repairs to the bicycles, is now determined to do an apprenticeship as a bicycle mechanic.

For a more sustainable Switzerland

The placement platform for volunteer work UBS Helpetica had called on school classes to submit their ideas for a more sustainable Switzerland. The price for their re-use campaign, one Sustainability project week in the Beverin Nature Park, redeems the winning class in September.

Are you inspired by the secondary school 2B project? Of course, good ideas will continue to be sought! Private individuals and non-profit organizations can submit their project proposals on the focus topics education, social affairs, entrepreneurship and the environment on the UBS Helpetica platform at any time.

This is UBS Helpetica

UBS Helpetica is a central platform for volunteering in Switzerland: This is where non-profit organizations and people who have sustainable project ideas meet – and people who want to get involved in such a project. Switzerland needs both. Because doing good is good for you.

UBS Helpetica is made possible in partnership with many non-profit organizations in Switzerland, the non-profit society (SGG) and benevol Switzerland.
