As long as you own an iPhone 12 or a Macbook Air M2, this security breach affects you directly. And unfortunately, there is not much to do to counter it…

Contrary to popular belief that it is time to throw it out the window, Apple devices have about as much chance of being hacked as Android smartphones or Windows computers. Security breaches are not only the prerogative of Google & Microsoft, and we once again have the example today, with this discovery from the Trail of Bits site, which discovered a protection problem linked to certain iPhone or MacBook models.

iPhone 12s and MacBook Air M2 owners directly affected

The Trails of Bits site was able to discover a security breach on several Apple devices. This security flaw explicitly involves the GPU of the devices, and even if certain iPhone and MacBook models quickly benefited from a security update to resolve the problem, this is still not the case for iPhones. 12 and MacBook Air M2. Researchers on the site thus discovered a vulnerability in graphics processors manufactured by Apple, Qualcomm and others. By using this breach, a hacker can gain local access to your iPhone 12 or MacBook Air M2, and thus read your data. This corresponds to millions of devices around the world.

What to do about this security breach?

On the one hand, if you own a model newer than the iPhone 12 and M2 MacBook Air, you can rest easy: Apple has confirmed with Trails of Bits that the A17 and M3 chips contain fixes for the breach. On the other hand, some devices have been patched by Apple since the problem was announced, such as the 3rd generation iPad Air (A12 chip). However, the MacBook Air M2 is still affected by the issue, just like the iPhone 12. So, what to do if you own one of the two devices?

Well, unfortunately, not much. Fortunately, there is no need to worry too much about this security breach: this exploitation of the GPU is quite easy for hackers to use, but since they require local access, there is no Overall, there’s not much to worry about about potential related attacks. Furthermore, an update should be offered soon by Apple to correct this defect on the devices still affected.
