Tonight, Chérie 25 is broadcasting the first episodes of the series “La Cuisinière de Castamar”. But what is this Spanish series that created the event on Netflix?

A SERIES THAT CREATED THE EVENT ON NETFLIX
Halfway between Downton Abbey and The Chronicle of the Bridgertons, La Cuisinière de Castamar, a Spanish television series created by Tatiana Rodríguez, plunges us into the heart of 18th century Spain and a forbidden romance between Clara Belmonte (Michelle Jenner ) and Diego de Castamar (Roberto Enriquez).
Inconsolable since the tragic death of his wife Alba, the Duke of Spain Diego de Castamar refuses to end his period of mourning which has lasted for almost two years. Worried, the King of Spain nevertheless managed to convince him to organize a gala to mark the end of his mourning and thus resume his obligations at Court.
The opportunity for Mercedes (Fiorella Faltoyano), the Duke’s mother, to find a new wife for her son. In the hope that her son will fall in love with her, she brings Amelia Castro (María Hervás) to Castamar Castle.
At the same time, the Marquis de Soto (Hugo Silva) conspires to bring down Diego, whom he hates, but the arrival of cook Clara Belmonte in Castamar could ultimately compromise everyone’s plans.
Beautiful and talented, Clara Belmonte, a young agoraphobic woman, quickly attracts the attention of the Duke who seeks to surround himself with competent people to regain his place within aristocratic society.
Despite their social class difference which will not fail to disturb the Court, Clara and Diego will fall in love with each other. But between matters of the heart, political plots, revenge, betrayal, scandals and secrets, will the two lovers manage to protect their idyll?
Adaptation of the eponymous novel by Fernando J. Muñez, Castamar’s cook met with some success in Spain but also on the Netflix streaming platform where it settled into the top 10 most viewed series in France in less than two weeks after its release.
Romantic period melodrama, costumes and sets each more sumptuous than the next, sulphurous scenes, La Cuisinière de Castamar skilfully mixes all the ingredients to delight fans of the genre.
If the story is not inspired by real events, the series does however stage a reconstruction of the aristocratic society of the time with its share of games of power and honor.
But The cook of Castamar does not stop there and uses her story to deal with modern social issues such as mental health, psychological disorders, racism, sexual harassment, sexism, homophobia or even social injustice. Enough to give even more substance to the series and its much more exciting characters.
