Behind every champion that arrives in League of Legends, there is a multi-step process in which countless abilities are tested. Although his design was particularly simple and the basic mechanics were ready in just a few hours, his ultimate existed in a very strange version that looked suspiciously like another champion’s skill.

One of the ideas Riot Games had for Zeri’s ultimate was to make it an ability very similar to Rammus’ A (Rolling Ball). Basically, when the champion activated it, she got a huge increase in her movement speed (150%) which allowed her to chase enemies or escape very easily. However, it had a big weak point to make it a little fairer: in case of damage received from a champion, it was deactivated.

On a theoretical level, it was an interesting mechanic since it allowed Riot Games to establish a clear parallel between the gameplay of Zeri, and that of its Valorant counterpart, Neon. However, the developers removed it because it was too risky an ability. This was due to two issues. The first was that you could trigger the ability and have nothing happen unless the champion was hit immediately. The other, that he was far too powerful against certain champions. For example, Zeri’s designer explained that characters like Udyr could never reach him.

Moreover, it’s not the only ability removed from the champion. Initially, Zeri’s passive allowed her to amplify the shields she received instead of stealing them from enemies…

Introduced in patch 11.23, the Spark of Zaun is one of the most unusual champions in League of Legends, because it revolutionizes the very concept of auto-attack. That said, it seems that the community took a wrong turn in trying to itemize it. The fault with his so particular kit.
