This week, Osom, the company set up by former Essentials, unveiled the design of its very first smartphone, the Osom OV1. If we have already had a few visuals of the back device as well as certain planned features, the manufacturer published, this Thursday on Twitter, another image, this time presenting the smartphone from the front.
The photo posted online allows you to discover the thin edges of the smartphone, as well as its slightly wider chin – but much thinner than on the Essential Phone of 2018. Above all, the image illustrates one of the main innovations of the smartphone, the Osom Privacy Cable.

It must be said that the smartphone will not be supplied with a classic USB-C cable, but with a model with a switch. Concretely, the switch will make it possible to provide only a simple power supply to the smartphone, to recharge it, or to authorize the transfer of data between the telephone and the device to which it is connected.
This feature can be particularly useful if you plan to use a PC to charge your phone that you are not sure is secure, for example in an internet cafe or library. The same is true in hotels offering USB sockets directly on the wall, without you knowing if they are simply supplied with power or if they are connected to a computer.
In any case, this function will allow you to ask yourself no more questions. A simple click on the USB-C socket of the smartphone will thus make it possible to deactivate any potential exchange of data with your smartphone and guarantee that plugging it in will only be used to recharge it. This is a functionality similar to what is found on so-called “USB condom” adapters, but this time integrated directly into the cable.
Osom also specifies in his tweet that the cable will not be offered as an option with the smartphone, but will be supplied directly in the box.
A high-end smartphone planned for the end of 2022
As a reminder, the Osom OV1 should take over, at least in terms of design, from the Essential Phone released four years ago. In particular, it will use the same choice of materials with flat titanium edges and a zirconia ceramic back. There will also be a fingerprint reader on the back as well as a Snapdragon 8 series chip. The photo module will consist of two cameras. Osom nevertheless specifies that the device will be “significantly larger” than the Essential PH-1. It must be said that the size of the 2018 smartphone – with a diagonal of 5.7 inches – greatly limited the capacity of the integrated battery and is much lower than what is offered on the market in 2022.
Osom plans to officially launch its first smartphone by the end of the year. The project for the manufacturer is thus to officially unveil its device during the last quarter of 2022 at a price that is still unknown.
