Sometimes a brand launches a strange product, with features straight out of another era. This is the case with Verbatim’s latest SSD. Indeed, this external hard drive does not allow you to repeatedly copy your data. In reality, this device is reserved for a very specific public, which seeks, for example, to keep sensitive data that is not intended to be modified later.
While hardware news is resolutely turned towards the future, as evidenced by the announcement of UFS 4.0 by Samsung or the appearance of the first 240W USB Type-C cables on the web. Nevertheless, it sometimes happens that a brand launches an atypical product and offers features from another time.
This is the case of Verbatim SWOVA128Gan external hard drive with a 128 GB capacity. He connects in USB 3.2 Gen 1 and displays speeds of 540 MB/s read and up to 180 MB/s write. What makes it special is that it is an external disk WriteOncein other words, the data can only be copied once. Cannot edit them once stored on the device.
For writing data, it is imperative to have a PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11 running on an x86/x64 CPU and equipped with Microsoft’s .Net Framework 4.8. As for reading, it can run on many systems: PCs under Windows 8.1, 10 and 11, macOS, ChromeOS, iOS without forgetting Android. The only requirement: exFAT must be supported.

A hard drive to store sensitive data
One question remains, however: what audience is this particular external hard drive aimed at? According to Verbatim, the idea behind the SWOVA128G is to use it instead of optical media in situations where the user must copy data that should not be changed in the future. The manufacturer mentions in particular business registers, balance sheets, medical or legal documents, backup and off-line storage of confidential data, or disk images. In other words, any sensitive data that requires long-term secure storage.
As said above, once the data is stored on the SSD, it can be read and only read on a device that supports the exFAT priority file system. Verbatim states that it offers 10 years warranty for the hardware. Not for data unfortunately. For the moment, the release of the SWOVA128G is only mentioned in Japan.
