Agility Robotics, a company specializing in the development of a humanoid robot called Digit, says it is soon ready to begin mass production of it. Its factory will eventually be able to produce more than 10,000 machines each year.

Unveiled for the first time in 2019, “ Digit is designed to go where people go and do useful work safely in spaces designed for people, starting with bulk material handling in warehouses and distribution centers », explains the company. A few months ago, the robot got a makeover and finally benefited from a head to make it more ” human “.

A ” turning point in the history of robotics »

From now on, the company wants to mass produce its humanoid with a view to marketing it. In a blog post, it has just announced that its RoboFab, a factory specifically designed for robot manufacturing, should come into operation before the end of the year. Damion Shelton, the co-founder and CEO of Agility Robotics, explains:

The opening of our factory marks a turning point in the history of robotics: the start of mass production of commercial humanoid robots. We built Digit to solve today’s tough workforce problems, such as injuries, burnout, high turnover, and workforce shortages, with the vision ultimate goal of allowing humans to be more human. When you are building new technology to improve society, the most important step is when you are able to mass-produce that technology at a scale where it can have real, widespread impact.

Occupying 6,500 square meters of space in Salem, Oregon, RoboFab will be able to produce hundreds of Digit robots in the first year, then gradually increase this capacity to reach 10,000 units annually. At full capacity, the plant will employ more than 500 people.

Digit will participate in the production

Digit will also work in the factory to help manufacture its fellows, a way for Agility Robotics to demonstrate its capabilities in the industrial sector.

Digit’s human-centered design allows for versatile use. Its initial applications include handling bulk materials in warehouses and distribution centers », Comments the company. For the moment, it is unknown at what price the robot will be sold. Perhaps we will soon see him on his doorstep with a package in his hands?
