Season 1 of the Fallout series has just landed on Amazon Prime Video. In addition to being rather faithful to the spirit and universe of Bethesda’s games, the series even allows itself to give answers to certain long-standing mysteries. Explanations.
Like many Prime Video subscribers, you may have taken a curious look at the Fallout event series, which has just been available since April 11, 2024. As a reminder, the show presents itself as a faithful adaptation of the famous Bethesda video game franchise. We also find among the executive producers a certain Todd Howard, the big boss of the American studio and Game Director of Fallout 3 and 4.
In recent days, criticism of the first season (a second has already been made official) has been raining down on social networks and in the press. From what emerges, Fallout manages to brilliantly transcribe the very particular spirit of the license, with its caustic humor, its assumed and unbridled violence, and its much anticipated refrofuturist artistic direction.
The icing on the cake, the show even allows itself to give answers to some stubborn mysteries from the Serie. Before going any further, please note that we will reveal some major elements of the story of this 1st season. So, if you haven’t yet devoured it in its entirety, “flee poor fools” as saying Gandalf.

The Fallout series finally gives an answer to this old mystery
As you know, Fallout games mostly open on the famous nuclear apocalypse who transformed the United States into a wasteland. On the other hand, the titles are rather silent concerning the origins of this great war. Indeed, the players never really knew exactly who had started the hostilities and ordered the destruction of Uncle Sam’s country. In other words, Who threw the first bombs? The creator of the series, Tim Cain, had suggested that it was a belligerent country, in this case Chinawithout ever confirming it 100%.
And since his departure (he no longer works on the Fallout series since the second episode), the question remains a source of all theories among the community. However, the Prime Video show has finally solved this mystery, to a certain extent.
Indeed, the series dwells several times on the events which preceded the last judgment through the eyes of Cooper Howard aka the Ghoul. Before being the creature we know, this character played by Walton Goggins was a former Hollywood star, converted for a time as Vault-Tec company spokesperson. It was he who notably promoted the famous anti-nuclear shelters.
A punchy revelation in the last episode
Over the course of the episodes, we discover that Cooper begins to doubt the company’s true intentions with these shelters, which leads him to turn around to spy on it. This questioning reaches its climax during the last episode, when Cooper eavesdrops on a meeting between the leaders of Vault-Tech and other business leaders (including Mr. House, the leader of New Vegas).
During this meeting, one of the CEOs asks Vault-Tec how they can guarantee a return on the investments required to design these shelters. Barb Howard (editor’s note: Cooper’s wife and above all executive director of Vault-Tec) then responds: “By dropping the bombs ourselves. A nuclear event would be a tragedy, but also an opportunity. Perhaps the greatest opportunity in history, because when we are the only ones, there will be no one left to fight against. A real monopoly”.
Be careful, however, note that we never see the Vault-Tec executives actually take action with an explicit scene like “we press a big red button and happy apocalypse to all!”. Nevertheless, Barb Cooper’s statements leave little room for doubt and validate the theory that Vault-Tec is indeed the one most responsible for the American doomsday.
