This summer, jellyfish are back on the French coast. Fortunately, the Meduseo site helps you avoid the beaches where they are present.

What if you could visualize the presence of jellyfish on the beaches in real time? This is the challenge launched by Jérémy Deverdun, researcher in medical imaging at the Montpellier University Hospital, with his Meduseo site.
Created in 2019, the site offers a color code indicating the population density of jellyfish: high (red), low (orange) or very low (yellow). Convenient to avoid the beaches where they abound. For example, know that their presence is currently strong on the island of Groix (Morbihan), while it is very weak in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).

First, the site creator conducts research on social networks using keywords and hashtags. It thus constitutes an important database, but not sufficient. Jérémy Deverdun also relies on user participation, like the Waze application.
“To report the presence of jellyfish, it’s very simple, and free. You go to the site or the application, you search for the desired city. Then you click on the “Contribute” tab, explains the researcher. An average is then carried out between the data of the social networks and those of the users.
Thanks to its collaborative approach, this tool is not limited to France. Meduseo lists jellyfish on the Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Australian coasts.
