The combination of a fairly harsh winter and the energy crisis had consequences for many public establishments. The Guardian reports that 85 British municipal swimming pools have closed their doors since 2019, and that the carnage should continue, even accelerate with the imminent end of subsidies. An English company that offers the free heating to the communities in which it installs its data centers.

We now know, data centers account for 2-3% of global carbon emissions. The solution proposed by Deep Green uses the cooling water from its data centers to heat the water in public swimming pools, as a first step. The system is currently being tested at a facility in Exmouth, South West England.

Deep Green’s digital heater heats public pools

Mark Bjornsgaard, director of Deep Green, explains the concept at work: ” most data centers waste heat generated by computers. We capture ours and give it to the swimming pool to heat it”. And it’s a win-win deal, since the heat from the computers warms the water and the heat transfer in the pool cools the computers. Swimming pools save on their heating bill, and the company on their cooling bill.

Bjornsgaard is well aware that carbon emissions from data centers are environmentally problematic. The millions of computers scattered around the world generate an enormous amount of heat, not to mention the energy they consume. He declares on the microphone of the BBC: with the evolution of the world, we need ten times more computers and we can’t build ten times as many data centers. It is therefore necessary to decentralize them and bring small parts of them to where the heat is needed”. The success of the Deep Green initiative is such that around twenty other English swimming pools have asked to enjoy the ” digital heaters ” the company.
