Filled with dangerous miasma, the depths can be difficult to explore on foot in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Fortunately, there are a few solutions to keep your life gauge intact, such as the trusty pet skeleton horse.
As you already know if you have started the wonderful exploration of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the game does not have one, not two but three open world levels, between the surface, the sky and the depths. And precisely, these unwelcoming basements are invaded by red miasma, which gradually lose the life of Link, for whoever risks staying there too long.
A mechanism that complicates the discovery of the depths, preventing access to certain areas under penalty of quickly ending up in game over. Especially since to take advantage of simple light and see where you are stepping, you will already have to activate the 120 roots that are in the basement of Hyrule. But to get you from root to root, plunged into darkness, and surrounded by killer miasma, you can always call on a trusty steed.
How to find dhe skeleton horses in the depths of Tears of the Kingdom ?
For the most do-it-yourself players, who have already built the craziest machines, in particular intended to torture these poor defenseless korogus, the depths are not really a problem. In these underground passages, sorts of small deposits are regularly accessible, making it possible to easily build gliders and other motorized vehicles to transport Link, thanks to soneau artifacts.
But if the call of nature is stronger, then you can try another method: capture a skeleton horse, also called Staldestrier. By riding these creatures devoid of flesh, already present in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildyou will be able to cross the puddles of miasma without any risk of taking damage.
Here’s how to find them in the depths:
- From the surface, you need to go to the Zio Siniö Shrine, located just south of Hyrule Castle and Watchtower, where you were able to obtain the Paraglider. If you haven’t been able to activate the teleport for this shrine yet, you can follow the strange red dot, which emanates from the miasma in the air.
- Once in front of the Abyss of Hyrule Field, drop down into the depths, taking care to cushion your fall with the paraglider, so you don’t crash directly into the ground (tested and frowned upon).
- Once in the depths, activate the nearest root, named Oïnis Oiz, if it is not already done. This will allow you to recover the map of the area and reactivate the light around it.
- Head north of the root, at the location and coordinates indicated on this screenshot:
- You should find a few Skeleton Horses there, enjoying their thrilling life in the depths.
- You can then approach one of them, the one of your choice. Don’t forget to crouch down and stand behind their backs, so you can approach them discreetly.
A tip that will help you a lot… but also slow you down sometimes
And tadaaa, you now have a skeleton horse! So you can ride it and explore the depths with it, just like you would with a classic steed. The big advantage is that it will allow you to pass through the miasmas without any problems.
The downside is that these horses are not always very cooperative. The undergrounds of Hyrule are hilly and your mount will not be able to descend into crevices that are too deep, or climb mountains that are too steep. This can sometimes lead to moments of frustration (or laughter, you choose), during which you will have to encourage your faithful steed to simply walk around a small tree.
But I promise, once captured, you won’t want to leave your new best friends — I arbitrarily renamed mine Dreyfus, for some reason still unknown to me.
