This ultra-light e-MTB is ultra-customizable and ultra-expensive

The Lightrider E Ultimate is one of the lightest electric mountain bikes on the market: 14.6 kg. Above all, this model relies on a configurator with a level of customization rarely so advanced.

While urban electric bikes have been springing up like mushrooms over the past two years, the electrified mountain bike segment is also booming. The Swiss brand Thömus has also designed a brand new model called the Lightrider E Ultimate.

As its name suggests, the weight of the vehicle has been placed at the heart of the specifications. Generally, e-MTBs suffer from substantial weight due to the components – larger tires, more advanced suspension systems – chosen and installed on them. However, the Lightrider E Ultimate is available from 14.6 kg.

An endless choice of options

To do this, the Swiss firm has opted for an all-carbon frame, a material particularly renowned for its lightness, but which tends to increase the price of a cycle. The other particularity of this model lies in its online configurator, available on the site since the opening of pre-orders.

This configurator offers a huge choice of options, which allows the user to customize his bike to an extremely advanced level. Everything, or almost, can be customised: from the size of the frame to the suspensions (and the travel) through the wheels, the tires, the saddle, the pedals, the handlebars, the grips or the saddle clamp.

Inevitably, the size of the frame impacts the weight of the bike: for an XL model, expect to exceed the symbolic bar of 15 kilos. Electric assistance is managed by Maxon’s Bikedrive Air system, which relies on a torque of 30 Nm, or even 40 Nm at peak. Which is okay, but not mind blowing either.

For comparison, the Mustache Samedi 29 Game 9 climbs up to 85 Nm of torque. To climb hills and taste occasions worthy of the name, it’s still much better. But at the same time, this beautiful baby climbs to 24 kg on the scale.

The Lightrider E Ultimate, on the other hand, is particularly reserved for trail and at cross country : we could have expected better, although its low weight may not require as much torque.

Price and availability

Three battery choices are offered: 250 Wh, 360 Wh or 426 Wh. Unfortunately, the manufacturer gives no indication of the autonomy of each. Available in red, black and white, the Lightrider E Ultimate is available for pre-order from 6290 Swiss francs, or around 6440 euros.

If the site displays this price just before the configuration, the price rises oddly to 10,101 Swiss francs (approximately 10,300 euros) when going through the stages of the configurator. Deliveries will begin from October 2022, specifies eBike News.
