When the shônen of our childhood materializes in real life! lovers of Yu Gi Oh! will undoubtedly have a little tear in their eye when they discover the rather incredible project carried out by a French youtubeur.

Indeed, SuperZouloux has developed an interactive dueling mat thanks to augmented reality.

Like in the cartoon!

In addition to being an extremely famous card game, Yu Gi Oh! is also a very popular shônen (or, in French translation, a manga intended for boys). During his adventures, the young Yûgi engages in duels with a completely crazy staging. Monsters pop out of the cards to attack their opponents in a deluge of special effects. But in reality, the clashes are necessarily less epic… Or at least, that was the case until today!

Thus, the youtubeur SuperZouloux imagined a playmat capable of restoring the creatures of Yu Gi Oh! In 3D. When a card is placed in a box, the monster comes out (almost) like in the manga. A feat made possible thanks to augmented reality and hours of work. Indeed, this project will have occupied the videographer for seven long months before materializing.

Well-oiled mechanics

The creatures were first modeled using the Unreal Engine. Then, each of the 3,600 cards was fitted with an RFID chip which, once placed on the mat, is recognized by the latter’s sensors. Better still, the famous mat takes care of the production itself by automatically switching from one scene to another. This allows the viewer to take advantage of the best possible viewing angle to admire the animations of the 3D model. And thanks to the commands of a Stream Deck, the player can launch the attack animations.

In short, a colossal amount of work must have been done to achieve such a result. A more in-depth look at the project is available via the video above. Many international media, and in particular Japanese, did not fail to express all their admiration in the face of such a feat.
