This zoo decided to offer Christmas trees to the animals, here’s why: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Nothing is lost, everything is transformed. And this also applies to our old Christmas trees. After having been the kings of the forests, then the stars of the house, and finally having welcomed the gifts, what to do with your tree? If several possibilities already exist, municipalities compete in ingenuity when it comes to finding a second or third life for conifers. This is the case of the commune of Chambourcy, located in Yvelines, which decided to collect fir trees from its inhabitants in order to donate them to the zoo from Thoiry, located in the same department, to the delight of the animals. Fir trees, mainly spruce trees due to their strong odor, may in particular serve as snacks or distractions for residents. “True olfactory, visual and gourmet enrichments, they provide animals with a diversity of smells and are sources of curiosity”explained the park in a press release.

The lions and tigers will have their tree decorated with vegetables

If you have paid attention to the choice of your tree, it is a safe bet that you also want to choose the best choice for recycling. In addition to being ecological and offering a second life to trees, certain animals including lions, tigers, lemurs or meerkats will be able to have fun with your old Christmas tree… if you live in the town of Chambourcy. Children from the community are also invited to come decorate fruit and vegetable trees in the zoo before placing them in the enclosures. In addition to being an enjoyable activity for children, this initiative raises awareness of ecology and recycling. But the zoo didn’t stop there in its quest for conifers. As the French are more and more fans of DIY trees, it happens that certain brands have not sold all their stock of traditional trees. Here again, the Thoiry zoo offers the stores concerned to come and drop off the trees. Enough to satisfy the animals and do a good deed. Once their scent is gone and the novelty effect has worn off for the luckiest residents, the tree will have one last life. The precious trees will then be crushed “to make organic restitution which will be used in the park gardens”, according to the Thoiry zoo. A good idea to relieve the guilt of not having chosen an artificial tree and start the new year with a good deed.
