Thomas Pesquet confides in the side effects he suffered following his return to Earth

Thomas Pesquet was the guest of Daily this Monday, January 17. The opportunity for him to confide in his return to Earth.

Bad memories. Thomas Pesquet is a face that needs no introduction. He is a recognized astronaut who has already performed several extraterrestrial exploits. On April 23, 2021, he again realized his dream by becoming the commander of the International Space Station for the second part of his mission. After a six-month trip, he returned to Earth, off the coast of the United States, on the night of November 8 to 9. On the Daily set this Monday, January 17, the astronaut spoke for the first time and gave his news. “How do you recover from 199 days in zero gravity?“, Yann Barthès first asked him. To which the principal concerned replied: “I am very well. I recovered a little faster than the first time.” The reason ? “I think there is a memory of the human body“, he assured. Subsequently, the astronaut remembered his first return, which was not easy. “The first time, I was a little sick at first. This time it went better.” he concluded.

He doesn’t like it. Faced with Yann Barthès and the columnists, Thomas Pesquet spoke of the side effects he suffers when he returns from a mission. “Sick like a little seasickness or earthsickness. Lots of disorientation, inner ear and balance not going very well“, he explains. And concerning the duration? “It lasts about 24 hours“, assures the astronaut before adding that he is also the victim of other unpleasant things. “We lost muscle strength, bone mass, coordination.” declares Thomas Pesquet before specifying: “It’s all recoverable. We’re going to go to the gym, we have people who help us, physiotherapists“. If he realizes a dream, he assures however: “It’s not a vacation. When we return to earth, it’s even worse than on board the station. But everything is fine today“, he concluded. An experience that, even if there are some negative sides once back on Earth, is a dream come true for Thomas Pesquet.

Thomas Pesquet: what other side effects does he suffer once on Earth?

Staying in weightlessness for several months is not easy and it is not Thomas Pesquet who will say the opposite. While Yann Barthès unveils images of the astronaut leaving the capsule, he says: “Physically, we feel super heavy“. The reason ? “We haven’t felt our weight for six months so just lifting our heads, arms, legs, it feels like we’re never going to make it.“, he assured. Subsequently, he indicated that he felt “that people have washed, that they are wearing deodorant’. We lose a little sense of smell in space. We have a head a little as if we had a cold so we don’t really feel what’s going on in the ISS, and that’s good“, he concluded, very amused by this anecdote.
