Marvel has unveiled a new photo of Thor: Love & Thunder on which we see a brand new character. At first glance, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Jane Foster, the new Goddess of Thunder (Natalie Portman), sit side by side on the throne of Asgard.

But if you look closely, you can see at the bottom right of the image the face of a woman wearing a helmet in the shape of a cat’s head.

According to the website The Cosmic Circus, it is the Egyptian Goddess Bastet (also called Bast), protector of the home, pregnant women and children. The latter is embodied by Akosia Sabet (Clickbait) in Taika Waititi’s feature film.

She has already been mentioned in the MCU by T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) in the movie Captain America: Civil War, but also in the recent Moon Knight series and was briefly shown in Black Panther in her animal form.

In the Marvel Universe, Bastet is the protective goddess of Wakanda, and is part of the Ennead (the pantheon of gods of ancient Egypt). It was she who gave the warrior Bashenga, T’Challa’s ancestor, the power of the Black Panther and control of Wakanda.

Announced in the cast of Thor’s fourth adventure several months ago, the Goddess appears here alongside Mighty Thor and Valkyrie, who has ruled Asgard since Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) departure.

This is not the only divine entity to appear in the cast of the feature film since in addition to the son of Odin, Zeus, the King of Olympus will take his first steps in the MCU in the guise of Russell Crowe.

The latter will have to face the terrible Gorr, the Slaughterer of the Gods played by Christian Bale in the film. A villain that the director describes as being probably the “best villain marvel has ever had“.

In this new opus, Thor engages in an unprecedented quest, that of his own serenity. But his retreat is interrupted by the appearance of Gorr the Butcher, a galactic killer on a mission to exterminate the gods.

To deal with this threat, Thor teams up with Valkyrie, Korg, and his ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, who – to his surprise – wields his hammer, Mjolnir, just as well as he does. Our heroes will embark together on a harrowing cosmic adventure to try to identify the causes of the relentlessness of Gorr, the Butcher of the Gods and stop him before it’s too late.

Thor: Love & Thunder hits theaters on July 13.
