Thor: Decision Day: Chris Hemsworth has a sense of humor as the god of thunder

Chris Hemsworth experiences the third solo adventure of the god of thunder in "Thor: Day of Decision". And it really is divine fun.

Marvel sends in "Thor: Decision Day" (2017) Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth (37, "Men in Black: International") in his star role as the god of thunder in his third solo adventure. Thor not only changes outwardly by shedding the long hair, but also shows a lot of humor. "Thor: Day of Decision" will celebrate its German free TV premiere on September 27, 2020 (8:15 pm, ProSieben). No Marvel fan should miss this amusing spectacle directed by Oscar winner Taika Waititi (45, "Jojo Rabbit").

This is what happens in "Thor: Decision Day"

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is captured on the other side of the universe. There he has to fight his way through without his hammer, which gives him superhuman strength, and meets old friends such as his unpredictable adoptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who has been living in the guise of the green Hulk for years. Will they be able to escape? Time is of the essence because the goddess of death Hela (Cate Blanchett) is up to mischief on Asgard and threatens to destroy all residents who do not swear allegiance to her. It is also important to prevent Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods …

New image for Thor

Already in the first few minutes of "Thor: Day of Decision" one thing becomes clear: This time the son of gods will work the abdominal muscles. Chris Hemsworth proves his sense of humor as Thor – and doesn't take himself too seriously. The native Australian had declared before the film started in 2017 that he wanted to give his superhero a new image. Hemsworth said he was a little bored with his god of thunder – and not just with the blonde wig. After all these years, something new had to be found.

New Zealand-born director Taika Waititi has given Thor a makeover that not only includes a new hairstyle and new allies. In his previous Marvel adventures, the god of thunder tended to make people laugh briefly through terse oneliner, but in his third solo film, Hemsworth fires off a firework of puns and knows how to take advantage of any situation comedy for himself. You almost get the feeling that Thor is now playing Chris Hemsworth and not the other way around. Laughter is definitely allowed here – and cannot be prevented.

Jeff Goldblum mixes up the MCU as the eccentric grandmaster

In addition to Thor's new humor, there are new characters that fit perfectly into this new Thor world. For example, there is the Grandmaster played by Jeff Goldblum (67, "Independence Day"). The ruler of the planet where Thor is captured is eccentric and absolutely weird. A bird of paradise as it stands in the universe: brightly colored and crazy. As a tough warrior, Tessa Thompson (36, "Creed") lets Valkyrie Thor go down more than once. And Mark Ruffalo (52, "Spotlight") aka Bruce Banner or Hulk you can literally see how much fun he had at the side of Chris Hemsworth.

Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (51, "Blue Jasmine") is allowed to let off steam as the bitterly angry, vengeful goddess of death Hela. A female villain whom the invincible Thor can't bring down so quickly. With her black hair, the dark make-up, the tight latex suit and the huge antlers projected onto her head, she not only looks sexy, but truly terrifying. But it doesn't really bring anything new "bad" with it. Big threatening gestures and hateful sayings – other adversaries have also delivered that. Blanchett can do more, but it's enough for this superhero fun.

Thor and Loki: an unbeatable duo

While the new characters provide new pep, there is one who is still Thor's best counterpart: Loki. Tom Hiddleston (39, "The Night Manager") slips once more into the role of Thor's unpredictable, power-hungry adoptive brother. The chemistry between Hemsworth and Hiddleston is not only palpable in their verbal battles.

When Thor uses Loki as a weapon to take out approaching enemies, it becomes clear: This brotherly love-hate relationship is one of the aspects that characterize this divine adventure. No matter whether they fight against or with each other, without Loki Thor would be half as good and half as funny – and vice versa.

Director Taika Waititi with a cool cameo

There are also cameos in "Thor: Day of Decision". Director Taika Waititi has probably the coolest thing in the film: He lends his voice to the character Korg – the giant stone creature convinces across the board with its brisk sayings. A well-known Marvel hero confuses Thor and Loki with his magic. In addition, a Hollywood star appears on a stage who has not previously been anchored in the Marvel universe. Even Chris Hemsworth's brother was able to enjoy a brief appearance, how practical that the Hemsworth men look so much alike …

Even more Thor in planning

"Thor: Decision Day" is great fun. The strip falls out of the series of previous superhero films. Not all Marvel fans may be enthusiastic about it. Granted, with all the humor that works so well, the story has been neglected a bit. Chris Hemsworth proves that you don't have to take yourself too seriously as a true superhero. A breath of fresh air in the "Thor" cosmos.

What Marvel fans also know: "Thor: Decision Day" paved the way for "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019). The superheroes went into battle in the two mega blockbusters against Thanos (Josh Brolin, 52). But it is far from over for Thor. The fourth solo adventure for the god of thunder, "Thor: Love and Thunder", is announced for February 2022. Natalie Portman (39) returns as Jane Foster and becomes the goddess of thunder. And Hemsworth revealed in a recent interview that he has no plans to send Thor into Marvel retirement anytime soon. He hope for more missions.
