The tax authorities made a mistake on the pre-filling of tax returns for several thousand French people. The latter must very quickly correct it online at the risk of paying more than necessary.

The 2023 tax return campaign for the year 2022 opened on Thursday April 13 and continues until June 8 in certain departments. This Thursday, May 4, several thousand civil servants received an email asking them to verify their declaration following an error on the part of the tax administration. For the second consecutive year, the overtime of the latter was not tax-exempted as much as provided for by law.

A change that came into effect last year increased the tax exemption limit for overtime from €5,000 to €7,500. However, it has still not been taken into account in the automatic filling for many civil servants. “This is the second year that my statement is wrong” explains one of them to our colleagues from Ouest France, exasperated. €2,500 was counted for me in the taxable hours boxinstead of being tax exempt.”

How to modify your tax return

The Public Finance Department calls on all civil servants to check their declaration as a precaution, and to modify it if necessary. The headings concerned are as follows: “Salaries and wages”: 1AJ for declarant 1 or 1BJ for declarant 2 and “Exempt overtime hours”: 1GH for declarant 1 or 1HH for declarant 2. If your declaration is concerned, here is How to go about modifying this data:

  • In 1AJ or 1BJ: register the amount of your net tax remunerationshown on your tax certificate.
  • In 1GH or 1HH: report the net amount of your exempt overtime hours. Generally, these are indicated in gross on the documents. To net, multiply the amount by 0.93319.

The 2022 tax return campaign is still ongoing

Started on April 13, the tax return campaign is still in full swing across the country. For latecomers, there is still a little less or a little more than a month depending on your department of residence. If you live:

  • In a department numbered from 01 to 19 (zone 1), you have until Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.
  • In a department numbered from 20 to 54 (zone 2), you have until Thursday, June 1 at 11:59 p.m.
  • In a department numbered from 55 to 974/976 (zone 3), you have until Thursday, June 8 at 11:59 p.m.

When you complete your tax return, remember to check all the data entered automatically by the organization. There are often typos that can cause you problems later in the year. Pay particular attention if you have declared any changes (of address, status, etc.) in the past year. Even if these have been previously declared by you, you may be asked to confirm them on your declaration.
