Now it’s getting serious for Elon Musk and Twitter: Mark Zuckerberg and Meta have already announced threads for this Thursday.

Internet giant Meta is getting serious: The parent company of Facebook and Instagram is launching its new social media platform Threads on Thursday (July 6). This was announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s (39) company on Monday in the relevant app stores for iPhones and Android smartphones. Already in the spring, Meta announced in a statement a “decentralized, independent social network that enables the exchange of written messages in real time”.

Threads should dock onto the successful video and photo platform Instagram and use the users already networked there as a basis. Tried with that Zuckerberg and Co. to compete directly with the struggling short message service Twitter, which has had to lose massive numbers of users and reputation in recent months since the takeover of Tesla boss Elon Musk (52). So far, there is no real alternative in sight, and alternatives such as Mastodon, Bluesky or the Donald Trump network Truth Social have not yet been able to establish themselves.

Are Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk really dueling in a show fight?

The App Store description states that Threads will become a place “to come together and discuss everything from the topics that interest you to the trends of tomorrow”. With the publication of threads, the public dispute between the two billionaires Zuckerberg and Musk enters the next round.

After Meta’s initial announcement that it was working on a Twitter competitor, Musk challenged his opponent to a fistfight. Zuckerberg publicly agreed. According to the “New York Times”, the whole action is actually not just a joke: There should actually be work behind the scenes on such an event. However, it is far from certain whether this show fight will really take place.
