European regulators are giving Twitter some breathing room.

While Twitter’s competitor Threads is slated for release on Thursday, Europeans will have to wait and watch Brits and Americans take the brunt of Meta’s application. And this because of EU personal data protection rules, which Meta, however, should start to know.

Why won’t Threads be available in Europe right away?

According to the Irish newspaper Independent, Irish regulators, in the form of the Data Protection Commission, are in contact with Meta to ensure that Instagram’s new application complies with the rules laid down by the Union on the matter. And unsurprisingly, this is currently not the case.

Indeed, Threads, at least in the form that will be available tomorrow in the United States, is planned to import the data of its users collected on other platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, in particular for targeted advertising campaigns. This use of data has however already been deemed illegal in Europe, when Meta wanted to display advertisements on WhatsApp from data collected by other group services.

As for Threads itself, it seems to have no limits: financial information, health information, search history, location, or other sensitive data, everything will be harvested, at least in the version that should be released. tomorrow. Not sure that a collection with such a big rake complies with the rules of the European Union.

No release date planned in Europe

However, the newspaper Independent clarifies that European regulators have not actively blocked the release of the application in Europe. It is rather that Meta has not yet bothered to present a version of the application that would respect the GDPR and other European data security laws. Unlike the United Kingdom and the United States, Threads has not yet appeared on the stores.

Meta has not yet communicated on this deadline, and no release date in the European Union is therefore currently planned. Given the state and the general opinion vis-à-vis Twitter, especially after its last measures, the moment seems however ideal to leave a competitor. But the hundreds of millions of euros already disbursed by Mark Zuckerberg’s company to the European authorities may have finally pushed the latter to try to comply with the law.
