Kaspersky warns of growing app scams ThreadsMark Zuckerberg’s new application intended to compete with Twitter.

While the popularity of Threads seems to be on the wane, after a hot start and already 150 million subscribers, the Meta group’s new social network, launched on July 5, has attracted cybercriminals like a magnet. Kaspersky experts have already uncovered various strategies implemented by hackers, which exploit the app’s user base to deceive them and gain access to their data.

A great risk for the personal and banking data of users

Already it is necessary to navigate between the good Threads and the bad Threads, as the other would say, now the users must also deal with the activities of the scammers. And many of them want to impersonate the application in order to deceive mobile users, to obtain unauthorized access to their accounts and therefore to their personal data and finances.

Hackers have created phishing pages that mimic a web version of Threads… which still doesn’t exist. On these, scammers trick users into entering their login credentials. Since the application is directly linked to Instagram and therefore to the Meta group, the risk of losing access to its various social networks is all the greater.

This not only poses privacy issues such as spoofing and doxing (note: attacks carried out to harm or harm a target by publicly exposing some of their personal data)but also more worrying financial risks says Kaspersky. We are thinking here of personal banking information, some of which may belong to companies, which use these accounts to create advertising campaigns, for example. And fell into the wrong hands…

Between cryptocurrency scams and follower gains and giveaways, Threads inspires cybercriminals

Kaspersky alerts us to another scam: Threads Coin. It is a bogus service that claims to offer its users extended capabilities, to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds, in the metaverse. By using the logo of the Meta tool, the application encourages people to buy this currency, Threads Coin, using Ethereum. ” But by doing so, they are doing nothing but exposing themselves to financial loss. add the cyber experts.

We also find traces of an operation which, on paper, allows you to add 10,000, 25,000 or 50,000 followers to your Threads account for free. Once the offer has been chosen, the user must go through a human verification process, a step which may then include sending an SMS or the possibility of winning a special prize.

To claim the prize, the user must make a payment, and obviously never receives the prize in exchange. The worst thing is that the people trapped are encouraged to share and distribute the SMS to their relatives and friends, for themselves to help spread the scam more massively. Definitely, hackers are not lacking in imagination.
