Threatened village – speed in Brienz is increasing – not yet a critical phase – News

  • In the Graubünden village of Brienz, people are anxiously waiting for the landslide.
  • On the slipping island rock formation above the village, the speed continues to increase, according to the Albula municipality.
  • However, the critical phase is not imminent.

According to the municipality of Albula, the acceleration of the island, which is monitored with measuring devices, has continued continuously since Easter. It must be expected that up to two million cubic meters of rock will break off – in the form of a large landslide, several smaller rockfalls or a rapid landslide.

On Friday morning, a helicopter was used for the early warning service above the Graubünden mountain village of Brienz, it was said. Specialists were flown into the slope on a long rope. They mounted additional reflector mirrors into the sliding slope. This allows distances and speeds to be measured by laser.

Prepared for roadblocks

As soon as the demolition of the mountain is only a day or a few hours away, the authorities have the highest alert level “blue”. Then the roads from Tiefencastel to Lenzerheide and to Filisur/Davos as well as the Albula railway line will be closed.

Two houses in the neighboring village of Surava also had to be evacuated. Regardless of the development, the hiking trail on the southern bank of the Albula between Tiefencastel Dalmeras and Surava Gravas will be closed next Monday for safety reasons.

As soon as the roads are closed, most high school students in Tiefencastel can no longer reach their school building. The lessons then take place online. The primary school children from Brienz are taken to their school in Lantsch by bus.

solidarity and uncertainty

The fate of Brienz moves the canton and Switzerland, wrote Mayor Daniel Albertin. The canton, many municipalities, companies and private individuals have donated money. More than 160 apartments were offered to accommodate the evacuees.

Brienz is evacuated

The municipality called on all road users in the region to prepare for the possible closures. “Clarify where you can stay overnight during closures without having to make the long detour via Landquart or the Engadin.” Colleagues, friends and companies could help in this exceptional situation.
