A representation more than necessary

Because of their skin color and young age, Cayatanita, Ericka and Nykia have often been discriminated against. "Diagnosed with aggressive forms of breast cancer, these women have also had to deal with inequalities within the healthcare system due to their age and origin.", explains the brand in its press release. Nykia learned of her diagnosis when she was only 25 years old and the doctors unfortunately took a long time to take her seriously.

"I felt a lump in my chest in June 2019. I knew something was wrong so I went to see a doctor. The reception I received was deplorable. The doctor assured me the lump would go away with antibiotics, but it didn't. So I decided to get a second doctor's opinion and I was told the same thing. By March, my chest had grown bigger and I knew it wasn't normal. I never had a real diagnosis, until I went to see a third doctor", says the young woman, now 26 years old.

It is profiles like this, which deserve to be represented, that Rihanna has chosen to honor. Three strong and inspiring women who fight against disease, continue to smile and keep hope for a better future. For these African-American fighters, having posed for this campaign is a real pride today. "Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I, with breast cancer, would be part of something so beautiful"Cayatanita said.

The Savage x Breast Cancer Awareness collection is available until November on the brand's website and sales will be donated to the Clara Lionel Foundation, founded in 2012 by the Barbadian singer.
