UEFA punishes the Super League teams harshly

The Super League has put European football into turmoil – now nine out of twelve clubs have ruefully returned to UEFA. But three clubs stick to their plans for an international super league. UEFA is now threatening them and announcing that they will initiate sanctions.

After the failed formation of a Super League, the European Football Union (UEFA) reintegrated nine of the twelve renegade top international clubs by imposing severe sanctions. The continental federation will, however, take disciplinary action against Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus Turin, who, according to a statement, “have so far refused to renounce the so-called Super League”.

“In a spirit of reconciliation and for the benefit of European football, nine of the twelve clubs involved in the so-called Super League project submitted a letter of commitment to UEFA, in which the position of the clubs was set out, including their involvement in UEFA club competitions and the national club competitions, “said the association.

These are the six English clubs Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, as well as AC and Inter Milan from Italy and the Spanish club Atlético Madrid. These clubs will each donate 15 million euros to promote youth and grassroots football and have committed, among other things, to paying 100 million euros if they “try to participate in an unauthorized competition” in the future.

“These nine clubs acknowledge and accept that the Super League project was a mistake and apologize to the fans, the national associations, the national leagues, the other European clubs and UEFA. They have also acknowledged that the project would not have been approved under the UEFA statutes and regulations, “the statement said.

A formal confirmation of the obligations and the manner of reintegration has already been agreed and signed by the nine clubs. Two of them, Manchester City and Chelsea FC, will contest the UEFA Champions League final on May 29.
