Three fashion exhibitions in Paris not to be missed at the end of the year

The collection of Azzedine Alaïa, the unique relationship between the house of Dior and women artists or even the lively look of the photographer Viviane Sassen on the clothes and bodies featured in fashion: a small winter selection of the fashion exhibitions of the moment.

Dior and women artists, a story of affinities

The Dior Gallery, inaugurated in 2022, is the brand’s Parisian museum dedicated to its history and heritage. Every six months, a new exhibition tour shows a different aspect of the house. Since the end of November, visitors have been invited to discover the links between Dior and women, more particularly women artists.

Christian Dior, who began his career as a gallery owner, was particularly attentive to the surrealist movement and the work of female artists. He was the first to exhibit the works of the Argentine Leonor Fini, paintings that can be seen in the first room. Along the way, the house’s creations are put into perspective with photographs, sculptures or paintings by contemporary artists. We find the panels with feminist slogans by the American Judy Chicago, which served as decor for the spring-summer 2020 haute couture fashion show, and the large photographic panels by the Japanese Yuriko Takagi which represent dancers in movement wearing dresses by John Galliano , Raf Simons and Yves Saint Laurent, all of whom became artistic directors of the house.

We also remember the astonishing large format photographs by the Englishwoman Katerina Jebb, who scans the creations of the house, or the room dedicated to the artist Niki de Saint Phalle, who was very close to Marc Bohan, artistic director of Dior from 1957 to 1989. The Gallery, located in the heart of the house’s very first workshops, has welcomed nearly 1,500 visitors every day since its inauguration. Online reservation is recommended.

Until May 13, 2024 at The Dior Gallery11, rue François-1er8e.

Azzedine Alaïa, passionate collector

Comme des Garçons dress, ready-to-wear spring-summer 2014, Azzedine Alaïa collection.

We knew Azzedine Alaïa, a fashion designer with immense talent, a master of cutting and highlighting women’s bodies. With this exhibition, to be seen at the Palais Galliera, we discover an Alaïa who is passionate about fashion and a compulsive collector. Died in 2017, the creator Franco-Tunisian has in fact devoted a good part of his life to acquiring creations by illustrious names in fashion. This is undoubtedly the most important personal “fashion” collection ever assembled. A heritage collection, part of which is exhibited here, with the collaboration of the Alaïa Foundation.
