Three first division clubs are still trembling
Crashing cup embarrassment for Frankfurt
It all started with SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday. As the first first division club, the newcomer had embarrassed himself in the first round of the DFB Cup. And so is in illustrious company the day after. Eintracht Frankfurt is having a bad afternoon.
The competitive debut of Oliver Glasner as trainer of Eintracht Frankfurt went completely wrong after an underground performance of his new protégés. The Bundesliga club embarrassed itself in the first main round of the DFB Cup with a 0-2 (0-0) win at the third division Waldhof Mannheim – and was still well served with the result. Marcel Seegert (48th) and Joseph Boyamba (52nd) met in the south-west duel for the Mannheimers, who secured around 250,000 euros in bonus for moving into the next round. Eintracht defense chief Martin Hinteregger was relegated to abundance of the field (62nd). The Frankfurters have to improve a lot at the start of the league next weekend at Borussia Dortmund.
In front of 12,151 spectators in the sold-out Carl Benz Stadium, the Frankfurters did not want to leave any doubts about their superiority at the beginning. The guests, with the newcomers Rafael Santos Borre, Jesper Lindström and Christopher Lenz in the starting eleven, determined the first few minutes. However, the team of the Austrian Glasner, who inherited his compatriot Adi Hütter, who migrated to Borussia Mönchengladbach, lacked the determination on the offensive.
The Hessians, who had to do without Ragnar Ache, Ajdin Hrustic, Filip Kostic and Almamy Toure, had little more to offer in the middle of the first half than a slight increase in possession. After half an hour there was nothing left of it, the harmony presented itself very weakly. The former Heidenheimer Marc Schnatterer even had the Mannheim lead on his feet, but failed with his free kick to national goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (40th). In the final phase of the first round, a goal would have been well deserved for the hosts, Frankfurt stumbled heavily battered into the break.
At the beginning of the second half Glasner brought in his veteran Makoto Hasebe for captain Sebastian Rode. But Waldhof captain Seegert scored the goal with a head after a Schnatterer corner. Boyamba followed suit for the outsider shortly afterwards. Only then did Eintracht wake up and increase the number of strokes for a short time. The Mannheim team remained the more dangerous team on counterattacks. When the weak Hinteregger prevented a counterattack, he saw the yellow-red card for repeated foul play. That fit into the picture. As a result, the hosts were close to the third goal several times. The Frankfurters couldn’t think of anything. Even of a physical superiority of the Bundesliga club could not be talked about.
