Three prominent victims – Serious falls of Vingegaard, Roglic and Evenepoel in the Basque Country – Sport

In a serious mass fall on the 4th stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, several cycling stars were hit hard.

The 4th stage of the Tour of the Basque Country was marred by a bad crash. Among the victims are three prominent drivers: Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic.

The drama happened around 36 km from the finish in Legutio on a descent. Around a dozen drivers went off the track in a right-hand bend.

Vingegaard with several broken ribs

The pictures of Tour champion Vingegaard caused the greatest concern. The Dane rushed into the ditch in the right-hand bend almost without braking. He lay on the ground next to a ditch for minutes and was cared for by carers in a stable position on his side before he was taken away on a stretcher with a breathing aid and neck brace, television images showed.

Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease a bike team gave the first slight all-clear just over an hour after the accident. The two-time Tour de France winner is “conscious” and is being further examined in a hospital. Later that evening, the team announced that the 27-year-old had broken several ribs near his collarbone in the fall.

Stage neutralized after fall

Time trial world champion Evenepoel and overall leader Roglic were also unable to continue the race. Both are suspected of having a broken collarbone. Evenepoel had initially maneuvered around the ditch cleverly, but then fell on the grass. Giro winner Roglic was at least able to leave the scene of the accident in the team car of the German Bora-hansgrohe racing team. He gave a thumbs up as he left.

The third to last stage was neutralized a few minutes after the mass fall. Several ambulances were at the scene of the accident. The Australian Jay Vine also had to be transported away in one. According to his team UAE Emirates, he is also conscious.
