Rabastens: city and medieval frescoes
Just a ten-minute walk from the train station is enough. Rabastens-Couffouleux to enjoy the most beautiful view of the city from the left bank of the Tarn. Before us: the ramparts and red brick facades of the old medieval city, classified in 2021 as a remarkable heritage site. Now you just have to cross the bridge to discover this wealth, notably the town hall and its medieval tower, the Hôtel de la Fite or the house on the corner of rue du Pont-del-Pa renowned for its corbelled facade. . Rabastens (Tarn) owes this wealth largely to the pastel and wine trade. The barges that once sailed down the Tarn served the ports of the Garonne, before their cargoes were shipped throughout Europe. What remains from these ancient times are the private mansions of rich merchants, built on the banks of the river. Along the banks, you can walk and take a dip as soon as the nice weather arrives.
Rabastens is also a cultural and associative hub, with La Fourmilière, which exhibits the work of local artists, and La Confiserie, a unique bookstore. It is in this building dating from 1837 that Lucette once sold candy to the village children. The elders still remember it! “We have preserved the link between the pleasure of sweets – we still sell them – and that of literature”, explains Kévin Zeguile, one of the two booksellers with Majid Berdjouh. Leaving La Confiserie, don’t hesitate to take a stroll through the Musée du pays rabastinois to admire the Giroussens pottery collections before prolonging the pleasure with a glass and a plate of steamed ravioli or gözlemes, stuffed pancakes. vegetables and cheese, at Tchin Tchoun!
