Thunderbird 91.8.1: Update irons out annoying bugs

Thunderbird update

Thunderbird was showing duplicate email notifications under certain circumstances. The developers have now fixed the error responsible for this.

Mozilla regularly provides updates for its email program Thunderbird. Version 91.8.1 fixes a whole host of technical issues.

The Mozilla Foundation not only has the Firefox browser in its portfolio, but also the e-mail software Thunderbird. The open source program is considered the most important Outlook alternative. One reason for this is the frequent updates that the Mozilla subsidiary MZLA Technologies Corporation supplies to keep the Thunderbird in good shape. With the most recent update to version 91.8.1, the manufacturer has improved again and corrected half a dozen errors.

Thunderbird 91.8.1 fixes notification bugs

As Mozilla explains in the release notes, under certain circumstances Thunderbird displayed duplicate notifications about new mail if you had created server-side filters. The developers fix this error with the latest update – and provide the following fixes:
  • smtp-js did not support CLIENTID extension for SMTP.
  • Thunderbird now reports additional SMTP errors to users.
  • OpenPGP failed to use some previously supported key types.
  • The OpenPGP key manager did not always display correct information after importing additional IDs.
  • Canceling an SMTP password entry resulted in multiple error dialogs being displayed.

Install Thunderbird update

How to get the Thunderbird update:

  1. Start Thunderbird.
  2. Click on the three lines in the upper right corner.
  3. click on Help and About Thunderbird. If necessary, the installation of the update will then start. After that, click Restart Thunderbird to complete the update. That was it.
By the way: If you are still using Thunderbird 78, the update will automatically switch the program to the current 91 release branch. Use this trick to prevent this “forced upgrade” – for example because of incompatible extensions. Alternatively, use one of the download links above to replace the old version. All e-mails, calendar entries, contacts and settings are retained.
