Soon to be 20 years old, Thunderbird will soon benefit from a brand new interface that starts from scratch.

The objective: to offer modernized messaging software, rid of its “technical debts”.

Thunderbird wants a makeover

While waiting for its long-awaited Android version, Thunderbird on desktop will soon launch its revolution. If the last few months have not been stingy with various improvements for the messaging application, this is probably nothing compared to what will happen by next July. Indeed, from the future version 115, the developers of the free software will launch a wave of updates spread over two years to completely change the interface (UX and UI) of the venerable client. A first preview of the new calendar section had also been shown at the end of last year.

The objectives behind this revolution are multiple. First of all, the team behind the software hopes to be able to offer an interface that can be adapted to the uses of each and everyone. A simple and refined version will thus be offered to newcomers, without forgetting customization options and more elements for veterans and Power Users. Accessibility will also be at the heart of this new version, still open source.

New start

New features, inspired by what the competition offers, should also be added over the patches. A monthly deployment schedule for updates should also be adopted over the next three years. Moreover, always over this period, the old code will be rewritten in order to make the whole more reliable and to get rid of old “technical debts”.

Indeed, Thunderbird today is still ” code that runs on top of the Firefox browser “. An operation that has its advantages (taking advantage of Firefox updates in particular), but also its limits and its negative technical consequences. It is thus recalled that a dozen developers deal with Thunderbird, against hundreds at Firefox. Thus, the slightest change in the latter can prove disastrous for the former.
