Tiësto: Expectant father is "super excited"

DJ Tiësto recently released his new single "The Business". In an interview, he reveals what he owes to love.

The Dutchman Tiësto (51, "Ritual") is one of the most successful DJs in the world. He released his seventh album "The London Session" earlier this year, and songs like "Jackie Chan" stormed the charts. Only a few months later there is new music from the Grammy Award winner: the hit single "The Business" was released on September 25th. The song is about not losing courage and tackling things – even in the Corona crisis: "We now have to concentrate on the positive things in our life and on being productive," explains Tiësto in an interview with the news agency spot on news.

"The Business" is about taking courage and tackling things. In which situations did you feel this way yourself?

Tiësto: The song implies that we are in a very strange time. I miss performing live in front of the big festival and club crowds. But as difficult as it may be, we need to focus now on the positive things in our life and on being productive. It's time to focus and move on to business.

What should people currently have the courage to do?

Tiësto: I firmly believe that you have to have the courage to take risks and follow your heart. Even if it's not the most popular choice. It's important to find out what makes you really happy. Because life is too short.

The music industry is struggling with major losses in the Corona crisis. How badly is the pandemic hitting the DJ scene?

Tiësto: The crisis definitely affected the way we present our music. We usually perform in clubs or at festivals. Apart from that, the quarantine allowed me to devote myself to working on my new music. I look forward to hearing them sometime next year.

What long-term effects do you think the Corona crisis will have on the music industry?

Tiësto: I think the way people experience live music and hear new songs will be a little different. But everyone is eager to find new ways to perform and connect with their fans. There are definitely exciting new ways to experiment with technology.

How do you personally deal with the fact that festivals and major events cannot currently take place and that clubs are closed?

Tiësto: Of course I miss appearing on a huge stage for my wonderful fans. But my career has always been about evolving over time and I'm doing that now. I just performed at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater and it was streamed live worldwide. It was different from playing in a crowded hall, but it was cool that so many people around the world were connected to me through music. It was totally fun and an amazing experience.

How do you use your newly gained time in the Corona crisis?

Tiësto: I'm used to being constantly on the move. So it's definitely a change for me. But I had time to focus more on the music and my family. It's a good time to be home as my first baby is on the way. This allowed me to spend a lot of time with my pregnant wife and prepare for our growing family.

How excited are you to be a father?

Tiësto: I'm super excited! Something was missing in my life and I can't wait for her to be here.

They got married last year. How did love change your life?

Tiësto: It made me a better person. I understand feelings better and it's an incredible feeling when you marry the love of your life.

You are considered the greatest DJ of all time. What does this title mean to you?

Tiësto: It is an honor to have this title. I am blessed that my passion for making music and performing has turned into a great career. But I always strive to get better and I still have many goals that I want to achieve.

Do you like to be a role model for young DJs?

Tiësto: One of the greatest rewards and joys is being able to share experiences and nurture great talent. As much as they are inspired by me, so much do I get inspired by them. I learn from their perspectives, their new styles and sounds.
