Tiger mosquito: a trap to make in 5 minutes to eradicate it: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Each year, Vigilance Moustique publishes a map of the departments concerned by the invasion of tiger mosquitoes. In 2020, these insects were reported in more than 67 French departments. Seven new territories are now classified in the red zone: they are Charente, Cher, Loire-Atlantique, Yvelines, Haute-Savoie, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne.

The bite of the tiger mosquito is also more painful than that of the so-called common mosquito, but unlike the latter, it bites at dawn or at dusk. A blister then appears on the affected area and sometimes causes itching. The tiger mosquito is easily recognizable thanks to its black body dotted with white stripes and its two hind legs often raised. It can be a vector for serious diseases such as chikungunya or dengue.

In a notice published on June 19, the Health Security Agency (ANSES) released several recommendations to protect themselves from tiger mosquitoes. In particular, she recommends wearing loose, wide, light-colored clothing to reduce the risk of stinging. Some repellents are also effective in repelling them, but it is better to seek the advice of a doctor before spraying them on the skin. The use of a mosquito net is obviously an attractive option for controlling these insects.

How to make a mosquito repellent trap?

Traps are also used to capture and repel tiger mosquitoes. On his Youtube channel, the videographer Indiana Fraise unveiled a tutorial to make a mosquito repellent. To do this, you will need the following equipment:

  • an empty 2 liter bottle
  • 20 cl of water
  • 50 grams of brown sugar (white does not work for this trap)
  • One gram of baking yeast
  • Scotch tape

First step: bring the water to a boil before pouring the brown sugar, then stir until the sugar is diluted and the mixture turns into syrup. Then let cool for several minutes.

Cut your bottle in half so that the top forms a funnel. Then pour the cooled mixture into the bottom. Add the baker's yeast, without mixing it with the liquid, but by sprinkling it. Finally, place the top of the bottle upside down on the bottom and fix it with adhesive tape.

How does this trap attract mosquitoes? In her video, Indiana Fraise explains that they spot humans thanks to the CO2 they produce. This mixture of sugar and yeast also produces CO2 which attracts these pests: they find themselves trapped at the bottom of the bottle and can no longer leave it.

Once the trap is ready, you can place it on your garden table or in your home to avoid mosquito bites during the summer season. The mixture must be renewed every two weeks.
