TikTok is the most downloaded application in the world over the first three months of 2022. These figures, which come to us from the latest report from the Sensor Tower institute, show that the Chinese application has passed the 3.5 billion mark. downloads during the first quarter of 2022. At the beginning of the year alone, the software was downloaded around 185 million times (27 million in Europe). These results largely exceed the statistics displayed by Instagram, Facebook or other software from the Meta company, which peak around 150 to 160 million downloads over the same quarter.

These stratospheric results are mainly due to large download volumes on Android. Users of Google’s mobile OS allowed the app to slip to the top of the rankings with 120 million downloads, the rest being made up of installations on iPhone and iPad (around 70 million). The Chinese application is the only service not controlled by Meta that exceeds the symbolic mark of 3.5 billion downloads. This report confirms the strong trend in favor of TikTok, which has dominated download statistics since 2018.

However, Meta and its many services are not left out. If none of the applications benefit from the same dynamic as TikTok, the American company dominates the ranking by the quantity of its applications present in the top 20. In second, third and fourth positions, we find Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, which all greatly exceeded the threshold of 100 million downloads over the quarter, despite the controversy that affected WhatsApp last year. Finally, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp Business slipped to 8th and 12th places in the ranking. In total, the Meta group therefore plays an essential role in the mobile applications market.

In the rest of the ranking, we find unsurprisingly services like Twitter, Amazon or Netflix. Both the App Store and the Google Play Store also posted small growth in the first quarter with 36.9 billion application downloads, i.e. 1.4 points more than in the first quarter of 2021.
